Each week the Journal Gazette/Times-Courier features the top local athletes in any sport

Bobby Aikman, senior, Arthur-Lovington boys’ track

Friday Aikman helped Arthur finished second in the 13-team Arthur Invitational by winning the high jump (6-2), finishing third in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 11.6 and 23.4 respectively and anchored the third-place 4×100 relay team that finished with a time of 45.3 seconds. Earlier in the week Aikman won the 100 (11.53), 200 (24.75) and high jump (6-0) as Arthur won a quadrangular meet.

Katie Davis, senior, Arthur-Lovington girls’ track

Davis won the triple jump with a leap of 34-3.5 Friday in the Arthur Invitational and placed second in the 100 (13.4), third in the long jump (15-0.8) and fourth in the 400 (1:05.8), scoring 28 of the team’s 47 points. Earlier in the week Davis won the 100 (13.4), 400 (1:05.83), triple jump (34-6) and was second in the long jump (16-2) as the Lancers placed second in a quadrangular meet.

Ashley Deters, junior, Neoga girls’ track

Deters helped Neoga win its fourth straight Arthur Invitational by running the anchor leg of the second place 4×800 relay (11:00.0) and the anchor on the wining 4×100 (4:28.7) as well as placing second in the 800 (2:33.7). This was after she helped Neoga win a quadrangular by winning the 800 (2:42.6) as well as helping the 4×100 and 4×800 relay teams win.

Jake Mercer, Senior, Arthur-Lovington boys’ track

Mercer helped Arthur, coached by Ryan Whalen, place second in the 39th annual Arthur Invitational by placing first in the triple jump with a leap of 39-1.3 and wining the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43 seconds. He was also third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.1 seconds. In a quadrangular meet at Arthur Mercer won both the 110’s and 300’s with times of 17.9 and 44.83 respectively and he was second in the triple jump in the Knights win

Treye Williams, Junior, Mattoon boys’ track

Williams helped Mattoon win the Olney Invitational Saturday by earning first in the 400 and 800 with times of 52.99 and 2:06.97 respectively. He also helped the 4×800 place third and the 4×400 earn fourth place. Earlier in the week Williams helped the Green Wave win a quadrangular by anchoring the winning 4×200 relay and starting the winning 4×400 relay.

SEC recognizes Regina George

FAYETTEVILLE – For the first time this outdoor season and the third time in 2010, Arkansas Razorback freshman Regina George, a member of the women’s track and field team, has been honored by the Southeastern Conference, it was announced Tuesday.

George, a native of Chicago, Ill., is the SEC Freshman of the Week. At the Razorback Spring Invitational on Saturday, she ran the 200 meters, the 400 meters and legs of the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays.

“Regina is bringing the momentum she generated during the indoor season with her to the outdoor track,” head coach Lance Harter said. “She is so crucial because of her depth. She can run on any relay and in all the sprints events. Plus, she has a ton of promise in the 800 meters. She is a great addition to this team and our sprints crew. They had a very exciting indoor season and our goal is to replicate that outdoors.”

In the 200 meters, she finished second overall and first among collegians with a personal-best time of 23.63. Her time ranks No. 11 in the NCAA (No. 3 among freshmen), No. 8 in the NCAA West Region (No. 2 among freshmen) and leads the SEC.

In the 400 meters, she won the event with a personal-best time of 53.94. Her time ranks tied for No. 12 in the NCAA (tied for No. 2 among freshmen), tied for No. 7 in the NCAA West Region (tied for No. 1 among freshmen) and No. 5 in the SEC (No. 1 among freshmen).

She ran the second leg of the winning 4×100-meter relay that clocked a time of 46.28. She ran the third leg of the winning 4×400-meter relay that clocked a time of 3:37.94. The 4×400 team ranks No. 2 in the NCAA and leads the SEC.

The Razorbacks will compete next at Texas Relays, Thurs.-Sat., April 1-3, in Austin, Texas.

SIU's McCall named MVC Athlete of the Week, again

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Southern Illinois sophomore thrower Jeneva McCall has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced late Tuesday.

The honor for McCall comes after she recorded a NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the shot put at the McDonald’s Invitational, Feb. 5-6.

McCall, who received her first athlete of the week accolade on Jan. 26, threw 55-11.75 to win the shot put last weekend. McCall has won the shot put in all five events she has competed in this indoor season and she has won the weight throw in 4-of-5 meets.

The Dolton, Ill. native is the only Saluki to automatically qualify for the NCAA National Meet, held March 12-13 at the University of Arkansas. McCall also owns an automatic bid in the weight throw, thanks to her toss of 70-00.25 back on Jan. 23 in the Gladstein Invitational.

McCall own the third furthest weight throw in the nation this season and the second furthest shot put.
