SIU-Edwardsville announces 2011-12 Schedule

siu_edwardsville

Opener at SIU Carbondale

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE track and field Head Coach Kareem Jackson announced the schedule for the upcoming 2011-12 season that features two home outdoor meets in April.
“Our team was personally invited to every meet on the schedule,” said Jackson. “That says a lot about our program, and our kids are super excited to get the season going. This is the most competitive schedule since I started coaching at SIUE.”
The Cougars will open the indoor season at SIU Carbondale Dec. 3 at the Saluki Fast Start.
“The first meet is a learning opportunity for a lot of them who have never competed indoors,” added Jackson. “It will be a good indicator of how we did in our fall training and will help keep everyone motivated to continue their training over the holiday break.”
Following a month-long break, SIUE is back on the track for three consecutive weekends beginning with the Holiday Inn Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska Jan. 13-14.
“As a staff, we try to get our out-of-state athletes a chance to compete in their home state,” said Jackson. “That is a big deal for us, and it really means a lot to the kids.”
A high profile meet in the Iowa State Classic Feb. 9-11 and a pair of “last chance” qualifiers signify the end of the indoor portion of the schedule.
“We will face some of the nation’s top athletes at the Iowa State meet,” added Jackson. “Thirty percent of last year’s participants qualified for the national meet.”

Thode heads for second-straight NCAA Championships

iowa_hawkeyes

The season is over for most members of the Iowa men’s cross-country team, but one runner has continued to train for one last meet.

Junior All-American Jeff Thode (Conant ’07) has been preparing for his second-straight trip to the NCAA championships, and he has the chance to be only the third Hawkeye runner to ever record two-straight All-American seasons.

The meet will be held at Indiana State’s Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., and it will be composed of 31 teams and 38 runners who qualified individually; Thode fits the latter category. The first 40 finishers earn All-American status; Thode placed 30th last year.

Head men’s cross-country coach Larry Wieczorek said it’s an exciting event for not only Thode, but it’s also enjoyable to attend as a coach.

Cougar Track and Field Completes Red & Black Intrasquad

siu_edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE track and field teams completed its annual Red & Black Intrasquad meet held at Principia College Saturday afternoon.

The athletes combined to set 16 new meet records highlighted by talented freshman La’Derrick Ward. The Cahokia native cleared 6 feet, 6.25 inches in the high jump breaking the old record by four inches. He went on to set new records in the long jump (22-11.5) and triple jump (47-3) before ending his day winning the 300-meter dash, a new event added to the meet with a time of 33.79 seconds.

“Traditionally, we have the meet in December so to have so many meet records and high level performances a month earlier is very exciting,” said SIUE Assistant Coach Eileen McAllister. “It was a great environment with healthy competition and athletes engaged to set personal bests.”

Heinz to jump for Duke

OPRF track and field star picks Blue Devils over Wolverines

 By Brad Spencer/Sports Editor

Carl Heinz will take his leaping ability to Duke next year.

The OPRF senior, who last season became the school’s first track and field state champ in 24 years and the school’s first state champ in the high jump event since 1980, has made a verbal commitment to Duke after mulling over offers from Michigan, Wake Forest and Iowa, among others.

“Carl is comparable to a five-star football player,” said OPRF boys track and field head coach Tim Hasso. “To be ranked in the Top 5 in the nation; those guys are rare to come by. He had his pick of schools, and it was all about which one would be the right fit for him. Duke is a great school and has a great track and field program.”

Hasso said he was pleased that his high jumper was able to make the decision early, even though the official signing day isn’t until Feb. 1.

Illini Track Club grows step by step

university_of_illinois

Three years ago, the Illinois Track Club comprised about a dozen people.

Then Jacob Englander came into the picture. The graduate student in aerospace engineering developed the team into what it is today, an established force of more than 100 runners. Currently, the men’s cross-country club is ranked No. 2 in the nation, and the women are ranked No. 4.

“We want to provide a competitive opportunity for anyone who wants to run in college,” said Englander, the head club cross-country coach and assistant track and field coach. “Maybe there’s people who didn’t know how to run, didn’t know how to compete. I’ve watched people grow, I’ve watched them learn. I watched people develop from finishing in the back of races we’ve been to, to beating Division I teams.”
