CARMI – The Carterville Lions went out in style.
In their last year in the Black Diamond Conference, the Lions outdistanced Fairfield, 131-114, to reclaim the BDC track crown. Carterville will compete in the Southern Illinois River to River conference next year.
“I think there was a little bit of pressure to win this year,” said Carterville co-coach Ian Thackrey. “I guess the River to River is supposed to be a step up. It’s a good way for us to go out.”
The Carterville victory came a year after Fairfield ended the Lions’ run of 10 straight titles. Vienna finished third at 85, Sesser-Valier fourth with 55 and Hamilton County fifth with 52.
“I knew we were going to have a hard time repeating,” said Fairfield coach Rick Book. “We had some athletes that didn’t come back this year that could have and we had some injuries.”
Carterville came on top despite winning just three events. Chris Culp won the pole vault (12-0) and Dalton James doubled up in the 100- and 400-meters. James ran the 100 in 11.5 and the 400 in 52.6.
James’ 400-meter win may have tipped the scales in the Lions’ favor.
“He had never run the 400 before,” Thackrey said.
The race was particularly big since Alec Waldron finished a stride behind James, giving Carterville 18 points in the event.
“That really helped,” Thackrey said. “That’s the 15th event.”
While the Lions took just three firsts, they piled up seven seconds and scored well in the field events.
“Our field events got us off to a strong start,” said co-coach Zach Cox. “We placed in five of six events. We picked up a first and three seconds.”
Ty Baker placed second in the discus, Bryce Usher was second in the long jump and Dan Frey took second in the triple jump.
Those seconds helped offset the four firsts by Fairfield and three firsts by Sesser-Valier and Johnston City.
“I think we got a first or second in every running event but the 800,” Thackrey said. “I’m not really that surprised, but that really ended up helping us at the end of the meet.”
In addition to James, there were several other double winners.
Hamilton County’s Jeff Stewart swept the weight events. He took first in the shot at 52-10 and won the discus with a toss of 133-9.
Fairfield’s Bryant Simpson dominated the middle distances. He won the 800-meters in 1:59.3 and the 1,600 meters in 4:45.
The Mules also took the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays.
Finally, Sesser-Valier’s Myles Tinsley took the long jump and the triple jump. Tinsley went 42-6 in the triple jump and 20-11.5 in the long jump.
