Ellis on track for Division-I level

Morton, Ill. —

Lexi Ellis has made tremendous strides in a sport she started competing in as an eighth grader.

The Morton High School senior’s quick development helped her land an opportunity at Loyola University Chicago, which she made official Feb. 1 by signing her National Letter of Intent.

Ellis will be part of the Ramblers’ NCAA Division I women’s track and field team.

“It was the perfect fit,” said Ellis, who gets to be in the city of Chicago, which she desired, and on a small campus.

Ellis will take part in the long jump, triple jump, 400 dash and 4×400 for Loyola, which is directed by head coach Randy Hasenbank.

She said she hopes to get faster and work her way down to shorter distances on the track.

Competing in track and field at the highest level was not something Ellis envisioned.

“I never anticipated doing college sports,” she said. Loyola edged out Illinois Wesleyan for Ellis.
