Hardly two weeks have passed since the indoor season began, and Luke Junk is already breaking records.
The Galesburg High School middle-distance superstar broke his Illinois State high school indoor invitational meet record in the 800-meter run on Saturday by a fraction of a second, finishing the haul in 1:59.87.
For Junk, a DePaul recruit who ranks among the top middle-distance runners in the state, the time in Normal was where it needed to be.
“I would have been disappointed if he ran over two-minutes flat this past weekend. He ran to the standard I had for him,” GHS coach Craig Hillier said.
The senior ranks among the favorites to capture the Class 2A state title in the 800, an event he finished fourth in last season. He also could figure prominently into the 1,600 at state, too.
Hillier said his standout is not taking these opportunities lightly.
“He’s been a workout warrior with track,” Hillier said. “From November until March, he had been coming in at 6 a.m. to do his work. He’s put in the effort. He knows there’s a lot on the line.”
