CHARLESTON – Eighty-two teams are scheduled to compete in Saturday’s Charleston Girls’ Indoor Track Invitational at Eastern Illinois’ Lantz Fieldhouse.

Class A competition in the two-division meet is to begin at 8:30 a.m. with last year’s IHSA Class 1A outdoor champion Bloomington Central Catholic among the entries.

JG/T-C area teams in the Class A meet include Arcola, Casey-Westfield, Neoga and Shelbyville.

Charleston and Mattoon are in the Class AA field with its field events to at 1:45 p.m. and the meet-ending 4×400-meter relay set for 5:10.

Mattoon is in today’s 4:30 p.m. Big 12 Conference indoor meet at Danville before going to the Charleston Invitational on Saturday.

“I’m really excited,” Mattoon coach Troy Haacke said. “I felt after the first meet we were quite a ways from Danville and Springfield Southeast. The girls have worked extremely hard and we’ve had some good weather.

Saturday is the season opener for Charleston.

“We’ve got a small team and just want each person to do her best,” Lady Trojans coach Chad Miller said. “I think we’re in pretty good shape.”

Springfield Southeast and Cahokia, which placed second and third respectively in 2A last year when the IHSA state meet went to three classes, are among the Class AA teams in the Charleston Invitational.
